its-salah replied to your post<span >: <em >My Thoughts on the Trayvon Martin Case (You may hate me)

People don’t know the full details yet. It’s been reported that Trayvon attacked Zimmerman & multiple witnesses confirmed it. The stuff people are hearing of right now, is that there were no witnesses, so nobody knows the truth then according to that

Exactly! So until the real truth actually comes out I strongly believe an arrest will not be made. Its what I would do as Head of Police. Too many stories. That was what I was referring to with the two different stories circulating.

My Thoughts on the Trayvon Martin Case (You may hate me)

A lot of people been asking my opinion on the case, because I am known to be pro-black/fight for all minorities at my school. I have been holding back my thoughts, soley because Auburn has taught me to become a critical thinker and the VP of Student Affairs Dr. Carry has taught me how to take my emotions out of a situation, to see the bigger picture and then formulate a decision on what I think.

Thus, I have watched people get upset about the remark that the hoodie had every bit of responsibility for killing Trayvon, I have seen my people make racist remarks regarding the killer when they thought he was white and then turn around and say other racist remarks when they found out otherwise. I have watched people take back their words after learning about updates in the case and have seen people turn this case into a mockery thanks to social media. All this is just sad.

Personally, this case is not about the hoodie, the skittles, the tea, the fact that the assailant was Mexican or whether or not Trayvon fought back….this case shows the Florida’s Justice System’s failure to review the “stand your ground” law and make the amendments necessary to prevent a preventable death. The government has known about these cases and have yet to do something about it. To me, that is a failure to protect the people. Thus, justice system is flawed and needs restoration. This case just emphasized the failure of Florida in a new light that has caught the attention of citizens nationwide. Florida residents are not the only ones that are affected by this law..oh no…there are other states that have this law as well.

Which means the people of Florida , hell, the people of every state needs to see this case as a wake up call to start making an educational decision when it comes to voting on laws and candidates that are running for office. People need to realize that what they vote on does affect them and may even hit close to home. I am not saying that the people are at fault, all I am saying is that if you know better, you must do better. I am happy to see people pursuing the right protocol to get the government to review this case.

*takes emotions out*

If you read the “stand your ground” law, you will understand why the assailant has not been arrested, Right now there are two stories circulating though out the media, one story the law protects…the other story the law doesn’t protect. Also, if the police were to make a premature arrest (as a result of pressure from the people) and it turns out the law protects Zinnerman, then the police department is liable for damages. Put yourself in the boss man shoes…what would you do. We talk about this all the time in my graduate class when we play President of the University. You want to protect the faculty and students, but if you have no grounds to have a party detained/arrested…you wait until you investigate further, until you find probable cause to do so. Trayvon isn’t here to give his side so it makes it harder to arrest Zinnerman(just playing devil’s advocate).

*puts emotions back in*

I really want to see justice for Trayvon and want Zinnerman arrested.

*takes emotions back out*

but the law is the law and until more details come up….no arrest will be made.

Now, the aftermath of this case is another story though. The racist remarks made about Trayvon, the tweets about the Hunger Games fans being upset that Rue was a black girl and other things that have popped up greatly emphasize the fact that we as minorities have far more work to do. We sit back and watch people tweet it/say it, we post the pictures and videos on our Facebook walls, reblog them on tumblr and retweet them on twitter thinking that that alone is going to stop them.Hell some of us dish back out the racist remarks (if we want to be honest). However, do we ever call them out on it? Do we stop and tell them that their actions are wrong and try to educate them? Do we do unto others as we want to be done unto ourselves? Yeah…I will wait on that answer. My things is racism isn’t over and racism does not just happen to Black people. Believe me…I know!

We must all become educated on what to do and how to react. We must stop making a mockery out of things that are so crucial. We must take a stand.

And for those that say “Racism is never going to end so why should I even try” or the classic “I just don’t care about it” I feel sorry for you, because its those same people that say these things that end up contacting the NAACP when they feel as though they are done wrong.

Take this time to read up on laws, understand the right protocol to go through, and educate others on a discussion that needs to happen, because the future of our kids are at stake.
